Background Check
To begin your journey as a PGA Associate, all applicants must complete a Background Check through HireRight. This online screening, conducted at a reasonable cost paid by the applicant, is valid for one year.
Important Note: If you have been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor, or equivalent, you must submit documentation to the PGA Membership Department for eligibility review before proceeding. Certain offenses, per the PGA Code of Ethics, may permanently preclude PGA Membership.
Qualifying Level
The PGA Associate Program starts with the Qualifying Level, designed to introduce key concepts and prepare applicants for success. The courses include:
• Introduction to the PGA PGM Program
• PGA Constitution
• Introduction to the Rules of Golf
• Career Enhancement
Each course is paired with a quiz to ensure understanding. Completion of the Qualifying Level is required to advance in the program.
Playing Ability Test (PAT)
Proving your playing skill is a critical step in the PGA Associate Program. You must meet one of the following requirements within eight years before registering for the PGA Professional Golf Management Program:
1. Pass the 36-hole Playing Ability Test
• Achieve a score within 15 strokes of the course rating over 36 holes. For example, if the course rating is 72, the target score is 159.
2. Attempt the PAT and Meet a Partial Score
• Attempt the PAT at least once within eight years and shoot an 18-hole score equal to or less than the PAT target score plus 5 strokes.
3. Submit a Handicap Index Verification
• Provide proof of a handicap index under 10. This satisfies the PAT Qualifying Score but does not exempt you from eventually passing the full 36-hole PAT to attain PGA Membership.
The PAT is highly competitive, with fewer than 20% passing. Diligent preparation is essential to success.
Eligible Employment
To register as a PGA Associate, you must hold an eligible position within an approved classification. While traditional golf roles such as golf professional or instructor are common, non-traditional roles like tournament director, sales and marketing, hospitality, and even real estate are also eligible.
Important Note: Participating in an amateur event will forfeit all work experience credits earned prior to the event.
