00:00:00 Getting started on your Golf Tech journey with Adam Rank with the first lesson today.
00:00:13The frustration with golf lies in the inconsistent performance, particularly struggling with hitting a driver despite success with other aspects of the game.
00:01:05 The golfer has a natural draw and his friend mentioned that he struggles to keep the ball on the green because of it, resulting in extra swing thoughts and improvements in ball striking and weight distribution.
00:02:00The goal is to break 80 in golf by hitting 77, with the preference to not get too greedy and settle for 79.
00:02:48 Using data and numbers from Optimotion, we'll compare your body movements to those of tour players like Cameron Champ to explain why these motion numbers are important.
00:03:48 You are not opening your shoulders enough during the swing, causing your club path to shift left, and you should aim to have a shoulder bend of 40 degrees like professional golfers.
00:04:35The key issue is that the hands should be closer to the body like Cameron Champ to improve swing direction and impact.
00:05:17 The inconsistency in your setup contributes to the shots curving to the right as you are bent forward more than the tour average.
00:06:05 His shoulders are closed 88° and hips are closed 44°, resulting in limited distance in the swing due to inadequate alignment of body parts.
00:06:51 Focus on improving the down swing for better consistency and try to achieve the same hand and club shaft position as professional golfers.
00:07:35 Your shoulders being closed by 53° are causing inconsistencies in your golf swing, particularly in how your hands and club move towards the ball too soon, leading to variations in club path and the direction the face is pointing, which results in inconsistency in your shots overall.
00:08:25 Position your hands correctly on the golf club to improve your swing and prevent slicing, while also adjusting your ball position towards the middle of your stance for better results.
00:09:15 Adjust the position of your hips and chest in your swing to help hit the golf ball properly.
00:10:01 Standing straight up and down with minimal backward lean is key to maximizing distance in golf swings.
00:10:50 The contact, direction, and consistency of your swings are good, but making some changes in your swing variables will result in even better performance with more consistency.
00:11:40 This position into your follow through involves bending the shoulders back 5° to generate power and speed, unlike your current shoulder bend of zero.
00:12:29 To improve power and speed in hitting the ball far and straight, you need to move your shoulders away from the target which will help you bend backwards more easily.
00:13:13 The speaker recognized that there were areas of improvement, but also highlighted strengths in the individual's performance.
00:13:59 Move the golf ball more towards the middle of your stance by taking an equal step with both feet after setting the club down with feet close together.
00:14:44 Adjust your grip and align your shoulders using a noodle to help close them a little more, while also positioning your wrists to make you feel taller.
00:15:26 Adjust your stance to point the arrow towards your belly button instead of the belt, keeping your shoulders in line and taking light swings for 50-yard shots.
00:16:14 The speaker corrects their swing posture to ensure the club path moves in the right direction, displaying a significant improvement in forward bend and swing direction.
00:17:10 The changes in your club path and shoulder position have greatly improved your swing and consistency, giving you more predictability with your shot shape.
00:17:58 Focus on the position of the ball, shoulder alignment, and stance to improve your swing direction.

00:00:00 all right I am here with Adam Rank We are going to get your GOLFTEC journey started off on the right foot We're going to do your first lesson today I can't wait
[Music] Tell me a little bit about your golf game where you're at right now kind of your frustrations just your goals moving forward My frustration is the game of golf Fair enough We've all been there We've all been a part of it And it always feels like something is always a miss Okay the other day I was playing in a tournament I don't want to brag I shot a net 90 But listen it's not about that cuz we're trying to we're trying to beat that by 10 strokes The problem is is
00:00:39 like wedge games dialed in I'm putting well and then like for whatever reason I can't hit a driver If you would have thought I had never picked up a driver in my life If you had watched me you would have been like you know what like have you played golf are you sure you're not left-handed like I am left-handed but I got can't play right In any event it just it just feels like it it never all I can't get it all dialed in at once Okay So it sounds like just super
00:01:03 inconsistent Oh yeah 100% Okay perfect That's that's very common Um any ball flight tendencies like do you curve the ball to the right to the left hit it too high too low anything like that i have a natural draw Okay And then I had a friend told me who who played competitively and he goes "Oh I love playing against guys that draw because they can never keep it on the green." So that's been in my head forever Okay that lives rentree in my head Okay so we got a lot of room up there for some extra
00:01:30 swing thoughts That's good Um all right fair enough What about contact do you feel like you I know you said it's inconsistent contact's been pretty decent You know for the longest time one of my early problems when I was growing up was uh getting my weight on the back foot and then taking huge divots just digging craters That's been better Ball striking's been a little bit better It's just you know getting it all together Okay fair enough What are you currently
00:01:55 shooting my handicap is a 15 Okay so and our goal is to break 80 I would love to break 80 I would like to be that person Perfect My uh my mom's high school basketball number was number 77 Every time I get a signature like I get to customize a golf ball I always use number 77 Okay So ideally I would like to hit 77 but breaking 80 I don't want to get too greedy You'll take 79 I would be happy with it Okay fair enough Then we'll do another series called hitting
00:02:26 77 Okay I like it I like it Um so what we'll do first I'll have you hit some shots just kind of warm up We'll take a look at your swing figure out why you're having all the problems that you told me about and then we'll jump into your first lesson There's going to be a lot for you to unpack here That's fine We'll have we have plenty of time By the way just just so you know I don't take a fullback I'm My back swing is very very tight Even Tony Fen now once told me
00:02:45 he's like "You need to take a bigger back swing." Okay Well then he also said "Never name drop." So you're two for two Yeah We're doing good [Music] All right Adam So you hit a few shots Um now we're going to take a look at why you're having a lot of the problems that you told me about So we'll use Optimotion and just some of the data and the numbers to kind of break down what's going on Okay Seem okay Yeah seems great Perfect So I've got a tour player up here This is Cameron Champ Obviously you
00:03:20 know we're we're not trying to get you to swing like him but he's a model for like what the best players in the world do So I'll show you kind of how different tour players are moving their body in relationship to what you're doing just to basically explain why these motion numbers are important Okay Okay Um so at a dress when you first start out I've got a couple of numbers up here So this first one is your shoulder turn So this is the amount your shoulders are rotated either open which
00:03:43 would be facing the target or closed Tour players on average are 8° open at a dress Okay so you're 11° open So you can see with Cameron Champ I can see a little bit of his lead arm a little bit of his kind of the top part of his bicep With you I can't see any of that If anything I can actually see your your lead elbow like below your trail arm So what's happening is you're basically pointing your shoulders more to the left which is causing your swing direction to
00:04:07 also shift that direction All right so that's part of the reason why we saw your club path on average hover like around 2 to 3° out to in So you're actually swinging more left than what you should be Um so that's a big reason for that And then this other one is the shoulder bend So that's the amount that your chest is either pointed down to the ground or up towards the sky Yeah Tour players on average are 40 degrees bent forward You can see how much taller Cameron looks in his address position
00:04:30 versus you being very bent forward That's the very That's very jarring Yeah You see it I mean you would never know until you look at it For sure So what that's going to contribute to is it's going to make it harder for you to turn which makes it harder to hit the ball far and also makes it harder for you to create a consistent shot shape because you're so bent forward Got it so your impact is going to be affected Your swing direction is going to be affected
00:04:51 That's going to be a big variable that's going to play a role in a lot of different things Okay okay So we're at the position in the back swing where the shaft is parallel to the ground So first and foremost I want you to look at Cameron Champ So notice how his hands are closer to his body so they've moved more inward And at this point in time he's turned his hips 18° closed So you're at 12° closed and you can see how your hands are much farther away from like your pelvis So that's another big
00:05:13 reason why your swing direction isn't in to out enough or isn't the direction that we want So that's why you see a lot of shots that what we saw were kind of curving to the right Your contact was inconsistent So that's a big contributing factor there Okay The second one you actually have a green number which is typically really good Um but because you were bent forward so much to start you're actually still bent forward more than the tour average at this point Okay So tour players are
00:05:36 actually closer to 33° forward You're a couple of degrees more forward than them which again just makes it harder to turn and harder to move your hands more in and around you So that's another big piece as to why that setup variable was so important Okay make sense so far yeah totally Okay so basically what what we're seeing is what you carried at setup is just continuing into the back swing just to compound the mistake and just make it harder Understand okay Okay
00:06:00 Top of the back swing Yeah All right So this is this is the big one here Uh again look at Cameron Champ So he's turned his shoulders 88° closed at this point and his hips 44 degrees closed Okay You can also see how much higher and further his hands have traveled Yeah Is why he hits the ball so far I know you said you're not super worried about the distance component but this does No I mean this does have a big thing Let's get good Especially if you're trying to
00:06:23 break 80 like hitting the ball further has a huge impact on that So um you've done a pretty good job with your hips You're 42° So again we got a green number there That's not terrible but your shoulders are only 82 Okay So again a lot of that contributes to just not having a swing that's long enough The path of the club isn't going to be the right direction It's just going to make a lot of things harder in your down swing at this point Um and the fact that
00:06:45 your hands haven't traveled quite as far uh is just a big contributing factor to like the lack of distance that we're seeing So I I know that we talked earlier like kind of off camera about how far you hit the golf ball Like there's definitely potential for you to hit the golf ball further than Listen I would love to have Yeah So first seems fun These two things will make it easier for you So first part of the down swing this is this is the really important part that you need to really pay a lot
00:07:07 of attention to cuz this is a big reason why you're hitting the ball both directions Okay okay especially when you're talking with your driver So Cameron Champ at this point you can see like where his hands and club shaft are how they basically run through the middle part of like his trail bicep That's a really good checkpoint for you to key in on That's going to make it easier for you to get the club on a consistent route into the golf ball Okay Um tour players have their shoulders 65°
00:07:28 closed at this point So if we look at you you can see how your hands are a lot higher Yeah They kind of cut through like your shoulder at this point in time Your shoulders are 53° closed So you're 12° more open So what that's contributing to is your hands and club are starting to move out towards the golf ball too soon Yeah So that's where you start to see some inconsistencies in your strike You see the club path vary from anywhere from extremely out to in to like very close to zero And then
00:07:54 that's what causes a lot of issues with where the face is essentially is pointed because you have to at some point figure out between here and impact how to fix everything right so that's where that's where a lot of your inconsistency comes in So just moving your hands further behind you at this point Even like where your elbow is you can see how his is inside of his torso versus yours is kind of protruding out behind you Just makes it a lot harder for you to get the club
00:08:16 in the right spot I can see that Okay So we switched views Now we're looking at you from the front Okay Um something that I actually really like is the way that you hold the golf club So your hand position is really really good You can see how your left hand kind of matches where Harris Englishes is Even your right hand is more underneath the grip So that's a really good piece to help you not slice So I know you said earlier you kind of have like a natural draw
00:08:39 This might be part of the reason why Okay Okay Um one thing I do want to point out though if I zoom back out on both of you um notice the difference in where the ball position is Yeah Like yours is very very far forward Mhm Especially for a seven iron Like I know Harris's is slightly towards his front foot but he's definitely more towards the middle of his stance So the more you move the golf ball towards your left foot the more your path actually straightens or shifts more out to in
00:09:06 Okay So this is part of the reason why you tend to have the club working too far to the left during your swing So for like a mid iron like this we just want to see that ball closer to the middle of your stance You do a really nice job with the rest of your setup from this view So nothing else that I would change I just we need to move that ball further back All right that's simple That's an easy one So we're back at the top of your back swing Now we're going to look
00:09:25 at it from this view So couple things to pay attention to Notice how Harris English has moved his hips towards the target like he's away from this reference line Okay and then his chest if I were to draw like an arrow out of it would be pointed more up towards the sky Mhm Okay So both of those factors help him hit the golf ball first and the ground second which is which is what you're trying to do Okay If we look at you you've actually moved your hips almost a half an inch away from the
00:09:49 target Tour players at this point in time are actually 3 in towards the target So you're almost a full inch away from where you should be Okay So that contributes to potentially bad contact every once in a while And your chest is pointed more down to the ground You're 9° forward Oh jeez Tour players are 2° backwards So really all that is is just standing straight up and down like we're talking right now That's 2° back It's not something crazy where you're like
00:10:12 arching your back and looking up towards the sky But what's happening is the more you bend your chest and it just makes the rotation piece harder It makes creating length harder So you can see how straight his arms are how far the club has moved versus yours Your hands are basically even with your ear And now his hands are like above his head Correct So that's a huge contributing factor to distance when you bend backwards It'd be like if I told you turn as much as you
00:10:37 can at them but bend forward and touch your toes first Yeah Like you you wouldn't have any rotation Okay So that factor right there and where your hips are moving are a couple big reasons why number one you don't hit as far as you potentially could And number two your contact and your direction is inconsistent Okay Okay Adam So we're at impact This part is really good You can see you got a couple of green numbers up there So um you actually do a really good job of getting your hips and your
00:11:03 shoulder sway back to where they should be Tour players are 3.1 in towards You're slightly more towards which is fine and 1.3 So two really good numbers That's part of why we saw some really good shots Like you hit a sample size of call it 5 to 10 shots There was a few in there where we're like it's it's it's doable right there was a couple others where it maybe wasn't So um again I just wanted to bring this up to say this part is really good I just think we're going
00:11:26 to have a lot more consistency with this position in your swing by changing some of the other variables which will just make it easier to get here every single time Yeah And I I mean again I I'm not a genius but like I think part of it too is just something that I've been working on of like where I needed my toe like the ball of my foot to be an impact Sure Might have helped me on this stuff But um yeah I want to go can't wait to put it all together No absolutely So like I
00:11:50 said just a lot of really good stuff Um I think this position at least we're probably not going to change a ton um because there's a lot of really good variables here It'll just make it easier to get these every single time by doing some of the other stuff Yeah Okay Last position we're going to talk about This is into your follow through So when the golfer's trail arm is parallel to the ground this is what this is the position we're going to discuss So if you look at
00:12:13 Harris English you can see how his chest again sort of points more up towards the sky Yeah Tour players bend backwards 5° at this point with their shoulders So this helps them create a ton of speed a ton of power hit the ball really far and really straight Okay So for you your shoulder bend is actually zero So basically you haven't bent forward or backwards You're essentially straight up and down I know it's a green Um but because of how forward your shoulder
00:12:36 sway actually is do you remember how it was 1.3 on the last one i do What should happen is this should actually start moving away from the target The more you move your shoulders towards the target it makes it really hard to bend backwards Right if you if you think of it like if I were to put my hips behind my shoulders I'd have no choice but to point my chest down to the ground If you tried to bend backwards here that would hurt So what we actually need to do is
00:12:59 we need to move this number more away from the target which will help you bend backwards more to make it easier for you to create the power and speed that you want and hit the ball really far and straight All right Okay Not bad Not bad I thought I was going to quit Well I thought when we started rolling through I'm like "This is going to be so humbling I'm not going to want to play ever again." But there was some grain Well that's why I tried to tried to bring in some of the good stuff right i
00:13:19 didn't want to just pick on you for 20 minutes It's the compliment sandwich For sure For sure Yeah You do this well you do this well but there's a big just burger of bad things in there That's fine It's not all bad That's why we're here though It's not all bad So so what we're going to do now Adam we're going to basically reset all the things we just talked about I I'm forget about them My job is to prioritize So we're going to work on your address position
00:13:40 and just getting you into a better setup and we'll start there That was Yeah Watching back and I know that it wasn't going to be perfect but like it's that part of it was worse where I looked like Yeah I'm like I am my using the thing as a cane like correct So we're going to set you up so that you're not so bent forward and that your shoulders are a little bit more closed Okay Okay Um so we're going to do that just by simply using this pool noodle Okay Very very
00:14:04 easy So go ahead and take your address position uh like you normally would Don't change anything yet I'm going to I can't help but try to drive Okay I had the ball forward Yep I did my thing So that's going to be the first thing We're going to have that ball more in the middle of your stance So move your body more towards the projector So if I'm going towards So you put the club down and then is there something like trying to make a straight line so an easy way to
00:14:27 do this would be if you set the club down and had your feet like fairly close together and then basically take an equal step with both feet That would get the golf ball fairly close to where it should be The cool part about the video is now you can just look up here and see it So you can see how that's a little further back in your stance Is that better that's perfect Doesn't need to change anymore from that Okay Like we talked about your grip was really good
00:14:47 All those other pieces were really good So all we're going to do is we're going to use this noodle I'm going to basically angle this slightly out to the right from your perspective And what you're going to do is you're going to align your shoulders to that noodle Okay Okay Um so that's going to be the part that's going to help us close our shoulders a little more Then the other part to get you to feel like you're a little taller is you're just basically going to have your wrists in a little
00:15:10 bit more of a position where your thumbs are more down to the ground So you may have to scoot a little teeny tiny bit closer to the golf ball Another way that you can think about this is if you had a laser pointer coming out of the end of the grip I'd want that to point like more up above your belly button versus like down towards your belt buckle Okay it doesn't have to be crazy and extreme Like I don't want it pointed towards your chin by any means but like closer
00:15:30 to your belly button versus like where your belt is Okay So those changes are all we're really going to do Are your shoulders okay or is it Yeah you're totally fine Okay You're totally fine You don't need to go any It's not anything crazy I don't want you to feel like your shoulders are pointed like towards me or anything They're just going to be as lined up as close to that noodle as you can get it Okay and then from here all we're going to do is just chip a few out there So I don't want you
00:15:50 to swing fast These are going to be like normally you hit it about 150 These will be like 50 yard shots Okay so just really small swings Um when you're ready go ahead and chip a couple out there and we'll see what it looks like Excellent Notice the direction the arrow is pointed For every shot you hit if you look at that club path number and that arrow isn't pointed to the right Yeah you should go "Oo those are like alarm bells in my head Something something's going wrong I got to make sure I'm
00:16:17 making sure my shoulders are in the right spot My my chest is in the right position." All those different things right because if you're not doing those two variables that club path number is going to start to move the wrong direction which is what we don't want Perfect Perfect Good swing So Adam the first thing I look I'm like I still look like hot garbage I'm like "Oh wait Yeah that's the before swing That's what you had when you walked in." So take that internet Yeah So 46°
00:16:48 forward Your club path was call it 4° out to in Okay So your swing direction was moving too far Going that way Bingo Oh jeez Yep So you're going the opposite direction of what we wanted So you look over here Obviously you don't even need the numbers to see the the massive change So you're you're bent forward call it 13° less Like I told you earlier tour players are at about 40 So this was kind of the exaggeration which is fine And I want you to feel that But look at
00:17:12 the change that you saw in your club path You moved it almost 12° Yeah The complete opposite direction So you went from 4° out to in to 8° in to out That's a really really good start to help you swinging the club the right direction which will give you more predictability with your shot shape and ultimately the the consistency that you're seeking Oh nice So So really really good change The other part that I that I want to point out we we talked a little bit about
00:17:36 pointing your shoulders more to the right as well Do you see here how I can't see your lead arm anymore So that tells me right away that your shoulders are definitely more pointed towards the right And on this swing in particular your shoulders were only 9° open whereas before I think they were closer to like 11 or 12 Okay so you've definitely done exactly what we want you to do Those three key components there are really what I want you to key in on of just the ball position the alignment
00:18:00 of your shoulders and then how far forward you are uh at a dress If you can work on those things that's going to go a massive massive way to help you swing the club the right direction Okay so that's really the focus It's all you need to worry about All right do those things and then you move to the next step once you've mastered that [Music]
